Vehicle fire north of Okotoks snarls traffic

Emergency crews are on the scene of a vehicle fire on Highway 2 near the Okotoks overpass.

A van caught fire on Highway 2 just north of the Okotoks overpass this afternoon.

The fire is affecting the northbound lanes of Highway 2 and is located before the split with Highway 2A.

The Foothills Fire Department responded with RCMP and Foothills peace officers at about 1:05 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found a van fully engulfed in flames.

Traffic delays are expected on Highway 2 north of Okotoks as crews respond.

Battalion Chief Will Scheerhoorn said the fire was in a one-tonne service van.

"Looks like the fire originated from the interior of the van, fully involved when we arrived on scene," Scheerhoorn said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and there are no reports of injuries at this time.
