Alberta Summer Games still has many volunteer openings

1,500 volunteers are needed to put on the 2023 Alberta Summer Games in Okotoks and Diamond Valley from July 20 to 23.

Organizers of the 2023 Alberta Summer Games are calling on the community to help fill the remaining volunteer positions for next month’s sporting spectacle. 

Set to run from July 20 to 23, the Games will see 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials descend on Okotoks and Diamond Valley to compete in 14 sports. As many as 1,500 volunteers are needed to stage the event. 

Some of the largest volunteer needs are in the following areas: 

• Accommodation — Sixty-plus village supervisors are needed for shifts between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Supervisors will be active checking in athletes and coaches, providing information, assisting with village duties and providing a general presence at athletes’ villages. Village supervisors will need to provide a vulnerable sector check. 

• Safety and Communications — Seventy-plus security volunteers are needed for shifts between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Security will actively provide a presence at Games venues.  

• Culture — Forty volunteers are needed to athlete and coach evening to set up and run carnival and other games on Friday, July 21 from 5 to 10 p.m. as well as to assist with Taste of Okotoks and the Heart of the Games concert on Saturday, July 22 from 5 to 11 p.m.  

• Facilities — Volunteers are needed for set up and take down and the Green Team throughout the Games.  

• Food – Eighty-plus volunteers are needed to fill shifts from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the Games. Food volunteers will help dish up food, direct athletes and assist with duties in the food centre.  

• Transportation — Eighty-plus volunteers are needed for parking and traffic control throughout the Games. 

• Triathlon — Thirty-plus volunteers are needed for traffic management on Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning.  

Volunteers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds are welcomed, although youth under 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

There will be volunteer rallies on Saturday, June 17 from 3 to 6 p.m. and Thursday, June 22 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Okotoks Recreation Centre. Volunteers that have registered will receive their Games credentials, uniform and other role-specific information at these rallies. 

Potential volunteers can also come to the rallies to find out more about the Games.
