A fun run this weekend encourages people to bring a costume along with their running shoes.
Presented by the 2023 Alberta Summer Games, the Rock the River 5k Fun Run takes off from Ethel Tucker Centennial Park in Okotoks on Saturday, June 24. The event also includes a one-kilometre circuit for kids aged 10 and under.
Games promotions committee member Jackie Heuver said participants can get into costume for the family-friendly event.
“If they have a sports idol, a superhero, princess, anything that they kind of want to dress up in,” Heuver said.
The five-kilometre route starts at Ethel Tucker Centennial Park and goes over the Laurie Boyd bridge, then heads west along the pathway before returning to the park.
The one-kilometre route will go over the bridge and follow the pathway before returning the same way.
The fun run will not be timed, but there will be prizes for best individual costume and best family costume along with other prize draws, Heuver said.
Following the run, organizers will host carnival-style games in front of Hub Town Brewing and there will be a chance to try a beer specially created by Hub Town for the Summer Games.
More volunteers are needed for the July 20-23 Alberta Summer Games in Okotoks and Black Diamond (Diamond Valley), Heuver said, and the run offers an opportunity for organizers to connect with the community.
“It's a good chance for anybody who might be interested to ask us some questions about what volunteering could look like at the Games,” she said.
Registration for the run takes place at Ethel Tucker Centennial Park from 10 to 11:15 a.m.
The kids one-kilometre run starts at 11:40 a.m. and the family five-kilometre run starts at noon.
Kids 10 and under are free. Registration for the five-kilometre run is $25 for an individual and ranges from $35 to $45 for families depending on their size.
Swag bags and post-race snacks are included in the cost.
