Okotoks students are helping the Alberta Summer Games keep score.

Students at Foothills Composite High School have made scoreboards for the rugby and softball venues at the Summer Games, which will be held in Okotoks and Diamond Valley in July.

“We love having the things needed for the Games created in our community,” said David Wooldridge, director of sport on the Summer Games board. “I can’t think of a better legacy than to have some FCHS students be able to say they made a part of the Games this year.”

The students have made three wooden scoreboards, one for rugby and two for softball, in Cyril Reschny’s construction class.

“He is an amazing resource for our community, and we are lucky to have his knowledge and energy as he helps his students do these kinds of things,” Wooldridge said of Reschny.

The old-fashioned scoreboards, which will require someone to manually change the numbers, will be adorned with logos for the Summer Games and the respective sports.

The softball scoreboards were made for play at Okotoks On Deck and the rugby scoreboard will go to Wylie Athletic Park.

“It’s good community relations and it’s good for the kids to understand the importance of giving back as a tradesperson,” said Reschny.

Wooldridge, who is involved in his fourth Alberta Summer Games, points out there will be a lot of junior high students from Okotoks and surrounding areas participating in the Games.

The Alberta Summer Games will see 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials from all over the province descend on Okotoks and Diamond Valley for competition in 14 sports from July 20 to 23.

There are also many opportunities to volunteer at the Games. To learn more, go to 2023asg.com.
