It’s Here! ASG 2023 Springs into Action This Month

As we’ve seen, the 2023 ASG offers a wide array of sports for die-hard and new fans alike. Every competitor is there for the love of the game and putting their skills on full display.

The Okotoks and Black Diamond Alberta Summer Games (ASG) take place on July 20-23, 2023. It’s been a long and exciting journey for the administrators, athletes, coaches, and communities involved.

Bowen Gottselig is one of those athletes.

“I am playing football for the Calgary Metro Colts,” he says. “I enjoy that I have the opportunity to play with the best athletes in Alberta and have the chance to compete against them.”

He continues, “I feel that ASG is a chance to show how great our athletes are in Okotoks. We are known as a hockey and baseball town, but I want us to be known as an overall athletic powerhouse! It is an opportunity to put our ‘city on the map.’ Again, I feel the Summer Games is a chance to play with and against the best athletes in our province. Coaches have the ability to teach and train high level athletes and be a part of the bigger picture of developing the athlete.”

Noah Heuver, who will compete this year in athletics (1200m, 2000m, and distance medley relay) is also excited about the Games this month.

“My two oldest brothers competed in the 2018 Games, one for soccer and one for athletics, and my next older brother is competing this year in athletics as well,” he shares. “ASG provides a chance to represent my community here in my hometown while competing against athletes from across the province.”

Heuver adds, “It’s a great showcase of all the athletes in many different sports, all in one community over a weekend. It’s a great chance for the community to get out and help support, by volunteering or cheering! The athletes get to experience taking their sport to the next level of competition, and staying in the athlete village will be a cool experience. The coaches get to inspire their athletes to be their best and show a good representation of their community.”

Softball player Amber Pereira will also compete.

“This will be my first year,” she says. “The thing I enjoy the most about the ASG is the new opportunities and chances I get to be taught by new coaches and teammates. The ASG brings together the community by having so many sports all competing and so many chances for family members and friends to come join and watch!”
