Church bells rang in three Foothills communities at 3 p.m. this afternoon as emergency responders and members of the public gathered to mourn those killed in a mass shooting in rural Nova Scotia last weekend.

Emergency personnel and community members - some wearing homemade masks - gathered at the St. George's Anglican Church in Turner Valley, St. Michael's Church in Black Diamond and Christ Church Anglican in Millarville as the church bells tolled 23 times, signifying each life taken. The vigil was organized by Black Diamond resident, Natasha Morrisey, who grew up in Nova Scotia and knew many of the victims.

The shooting spanned six communities and killed at least 23 people, including an unborn child.
