Horses, skiing and cheese returning to Foothills at Skijordue '24

Kamilla Grabinski gets air towed by Gongshow Prescott atop Hank in the long jump segment of Skijordue at the Calgary Polo Club on Feb. 25, 2023.

Skiers will giddy up and go off to the races for one of the Foothills' most beloved events.

Skijordue, Alberta's horse-drawn skiing competition, is returning to the Millarville Racetrack on Saturday, March 2.

The event highlights the sport of horse-drawn skiing, or skijor, and gourmet fondue.

Competitors will take part in four main categories: circuit, relay, sprint and long jump. First-place winners of each category will receive a cash prize and custom champions' buckles, and second-and-third-place winners will receive cash and swag.

Over 100 competitors are signed up for the event, along with two trick riders and four stunt riders.

The horses may be the main attraction, but spectators so hungry they could eat a horse can enjoy the event's signature cuisine, featuring gourmet fondue, bratwurst, poutine and more.

Outside of horses and food, the event will also feature the Spectator Skijorstyle fashion show and an après-ski party

The annual event is also a fundraiser, raising more than $25,000 for Prairie Sky Equine Assisted Therapy and $4,000 for the Millarville Racing & Agricultural Society Arena Rebuild.

Tickets are expected to sell out, and are available here along with more information about the event.
