New temporary fishing restrictions in effect

A sign lists fishing regulations for the Highwood River, in fisheries management zone ES1, at a river access point west of Longview in Foothills County on July 15, 2021.

Fishing restrictions are now in effect for areas in the ES1 and PP1 fisheries management zones in southern Alberta.

Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) issued a time of day angling restriction on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The restriction means fishing is prohibited at certain locations from 2 p.m. to midnight daily, until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 31.

A release from AEP said all streams and rivers in fisheries management zone ES1, including the Bow River downstream of Banff National Park, to Bassano Dam in management zone PP1, including Ghost Reservoir, Bearspaw Reservoir and Bassano Reservoir, are affected.

Also in fisheries management zone PP1, the St. Mary's River, and tributaries, below the St. Mary's Reservoir are affected.

AEP says the restrictions are designed to protect fish during times of high water temperature and low flow rates in rivers and streams.

During the 2022-23 sportfishing regulation engagement, feedback was gathered by AEP about fishing restrictions during times of high water temperatures and low stream flows, and the AEP said time of day angling restrictions were developed to be a flexible approach to protect fish during those periods.
