Foothills Energy Co-op

The Foothills Energy Co-op markets electricity, natural gas and internet to the residents of Alberta at competitive rates, with the express purpose of retaining revenues for use in the communities we serve.

Electricity and Natural Gas retailers in Alberta are required to pay a Prudential charge to guarantee payment to the generators for the cost of energy a consumer consumes and to the distribution utilities for delivery charges. Your investment in our prudential account allows us to keep our rates lower and continue to save you money on your electricity bill. The 5% interest per annum is credited to your monthly Foothills Energy Co-op bill and the Prudential is fully refundable should you choose to leave Foothills Energy Co-op.

The Co-op was formed in 2016 with the mandate to accumulate net revenues to fund and support energy conservation, green energy and sustainability initiatives within our service areas. Because dollars stay in the community, funds accumulate in the Co-op Community Fund.

The Co-op Community Fund is used for projects that members initiate. Proposals that advance Co-op goals are submitted and approved by a project committee made up of Co-op members. In effect, members fund and carry out worthwhile community projects with revenues that would otherwise go to large corporations.

The Co-op is chartered under the Alberta Co-operatives Act and run a volunteer board of directors who are elected by members at the annual general meeting, Each member has an opportunity to participate and promote projects that advance the guiding principles of the Co-op.
