Communication key to Red Deer Lake classroom

Dear Editor,

Without any notification, last fall Grade 2 students and their parents returned to Red Deer Lake School to find the partition wall between two classrooms had been removed, creating one large classroom with 47 students.

It is ironic that removing this physical partitioning wall created an insurmountable wall between the school and many parents of the Grade 2 students.

Approximately 13 years ago, when I taught at Percy Pegler School, the Foothills School Division had peer mediators in elementary schools.

What happened to the division’s recognition of resolving conflicts through communication?

Adults and organizations model for children.

We tell children, “Use your words.” While I realize we do not know the full story, the take away in this instance seems to be that the Foothills School Division, Red Deer Lake School and parents of Grade 2 students were not able to use their words to find a solution.

Several parents now find themselves in the position of having to move their children. Why was the school division unable to allow the community school to be a community school and meet the needs of the students?
