Town should not get into transit business

Dear Editor, The idea of local transit once again being discussed by town administration and council has me upset. There was already one attempt at local transit (the subsidized GO program) that failed miserably.

Dear Editor, The idea of local transit once again being discussed by town administration and council has me upset. There was already one attempt at local transit (the subsidized GO program) that failed miserably. This town is small and my teenage kids walk or ride their bikes everywhere from one end of town to the other. Granted there are a small number of users that need transportation to and from locations. But there are already a number of options out there (walk, bike, drive, taxi) and other options that the town could explore (bike lending, Uber, Lyft) before taking on this huge financial commitment. In my opinion, given the limited number of users and the significant capital outlay and annual subsidy required by taxpayers this issue should go to a referendum. Or maybe common sense would prevail and the Town would opt for a far more cost effective plan by providing low income individuals with a transit subsidy and expand services to allow for Uber which provide local employment (for example, vehicles already on the road, not more new vehicles that the town would have to purchase). Transit in our small town is not required yet as has been demonstrated by the already failed attempt with GO transit. Local transit provided by the town is a solution looking for a problem.
