A classic Dewdney Players production is back.

The Okotoks-based theatre troupe promises to have audiences rolling in the aisles with Squabbles by Marshall Karp, coming to the Old Church Theatre stage for 10 performances beginning this Friday (May 2).

The production, which marks the final play of the troupe's 2024-2025 season, features a cast comprised of seasoned Dewdney veterans Patrick Brown, Hollie Darel, Brad Fowler, Kelly Kozak, Daniel Rose, Ed Sands and Debbie Sands.

The play was first performed by the Dewdney Players 25 years ago and is now being reprised with direction by Brad Snowden (Arsenic & Old Lace, Lion in Winter, Bullshot Crummond) as well as production by Jane Platt (Wizard of Oz, Plaza Suite, Bullshot Crummond).

"Abe Dreyfus, a cantankerous widower, moves in with his daughter, Alice, and her husband Jerry, a jingle writer," explained the Dewdney Players' Ed Sands. "The plot twists when Alice and Jerry discover they are expecting their first child. Things get even more complicated when Mildred, Jerry’s mother, comes looking for a place to stay. Abe, the crusty retired New York City cab driver, is not impressed with this development, as he and Mildred had a disastrous meeting at Alice and Jerry’s wedding."

Squabbles is "possibly the funniest play that Dewdney has ever presented," proclaimed Sands, adding that hilarious side characters such as Puerto Rican handyman Hector Lopez and Abe’s card-playing, coffee-loving neighbour Sol Wasserman are sure to delight audiences.

"The relationship between Abe and Mildred gets off to a rocky start, but sparks fly in more ways than one," he continued.

Having performed the comedic Noises Off last November, the Dewdney Players production team felt that staging another comedy was the best way to close off the season.

The Dewdney Players is fresh off theatrical success, having taken home five awards at the 2025 Alberta Drama Festival Association Foothills Regional One Act Play Festival.

Last year's festival saw the Dewdney Players' Dave Hall and Ed Sands take home awards for outstanding director and outstanding technical merit, respectively.

The troupe is now headed to provincials, with the 2025 Alberta Drama Festival Association Provincial One Act Play Festival taking place in Medicine Hat on May 30 and 31.

Squabbles opens on May 2 at the Old Church Theatre and runs weekends to May 17, including matinees on May 10 and 17. Tickets are available at www.dewdneyplayers.com.
