Free screening of Magic Hours at Wales Theatre

CBC documentary that looks at the unique issues facing Alberta’s independently owned theatres features High River institution.

The Wales Theatre in High River is offering a free screening of a CBC documentary that it’s featured in.

On Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m., the Wales Theatre will host a free screening of Magic Hours, which looks at the unique issues facing Alberta’s independently owned theatres.

CBC says the film dives into the world of struggling movie houses across Alberta, meeting the passionate protectors reviving, re-inventing and sometimes letting go of these once-vital community spaces.

The historic Wales Theatre opened in 1927 as the Highwood Theatre but changed its name in 1935 to honour the Prince of Wales, who homesteaded at nearby Longview.

The Wales blends old with new as its ornate fixtures and free-standing balcony were around for the silent picture era, but it’s now equipped with all the latest digital equipment, including the ability to show 3D movies.

It’s been owned by the Kidwai family for more than two decades.
