High River baker hosting tasty trivia show

Participants will have to eat progressively spicier pies in ‘The Generation That' presented by Ubuntu Pies at Highwood Centre March 30

A High River bakery is hoping to warm the community with some spice.

Ubuntu Pies is presenting a family-friendly live show dubbed ‘The Generation That’ at 6:32 p.m. on March 30 at the Highwood Centre.

The show will feature three segments all centered on charity and community: a talk show, an elementary-aged community trivia game and a family game, with youth musicians for entertainment.

“All these are just ways of getting young people to showcase their skills, their talents, their abilities, but central to that is they should be able to make some contribution to their community,” said Ubuntu Pies proprietor Xolani Ncube.

“I find young people, they are very capable of doing a lot.

“It goes back to our purpose as a company, it ties to who we are as Ubuntu Pies.”

The word Ubuntu originates from South Africa, Ncube explained.

“It speaks to the oneness of humanity, how we are all connected in some way,” he said. “We are defined by our kindness and compassion.”

The talk show segment, dubbed ‘Once Upon a Pie,' turns the heat up right away as guests each down five progressively spicier pies.

With each one down the participants will receive $100 to donate to a local charity or community project of their choosing.

While not as big as the meal-sized Ubuntu jerk chicken pies, these may pack a punch, so water and milk will be on hand in case people can’t take the heat.

Taking part in the trivia portion are students from Joe Clark and Red Deer Lake Schools, as well as the Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills.

Teams of three will get to put their heads together to answer questions concocted by the High River Library.

“Winners of that trivia will get $500 they can donate towards a charity of their choice as well,” Ncube said. “Then we’ll take the winners of the trivia and we’ll pick three people from the audience to go against the school kids.”

The third segment brings the game home as two families are selected, and their knowledge tested against the moms.

“Then we have a game show titled ‘Mom Knows Best’ where we bring up a family, and we start asking them questions,” Ncube explained. “A question might be, ‘If the family was watching a movie, who would be the first to fall asleep?’ and the family with the most points will make a charity donation at the end of the game.”

Joining the event is Katie Fournell of K-T Events as MC, with the High River Performing Arts Foundation supporting the event.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and can be purchased at showpass.com/the-generation-that-2 or in person at Ubuntu Pies.
