Sparks flew at a welding competition in Calgary.
Thirty-six students from nine high schools in the Calgary area competed in the 10th annual Calgary High School Welding Rodeo on Feb. 22, with four Grade 12 students from Foothills Composite High School representing Okotoks in the competition.
The talented youngsters — Austin Kingma, Jillian Stewart, Brodie Ham and Carter Cooper — earned second place overall, proving Okotokians are a force to be reckoned with in the fabrication scene.
The event saw each team, consisting of four students, fabricate a chuckwagon based on blueprint interpretation, which then went through a water leak test. Students also crafted scrap metal sculptures under the “Western Welding” theme to showcase their creativity.
The Okotoks team created a full-scale saddle out of scrap metal using materials they didn't know of beforehand.
The Calgary High School Welding Rodeo was put on by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Lodge 146, a union representing boilermakers and welders in Alberta.
