Roseanne West’s New Works coming to Lineham House

Three-week solo show at Okotoks gallery to showcase the vibrant and vivid works of renowned artist.

To coincide with the celebration of its sixth anniversary, Lineham House Galleries will open an exhibit by Western Canadian artist Roseanne West next weekend.

New Works will revel in the vibrancy, colour and gravitas of a quiet artist who has experienced a lifetime of art history through various art movements here in Alberta and throughout Western Canada.

A private opening is scheduled for Friday, June 2 at 7 p.m., followed by a public opening on Saturday, June 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show will be on view at the Elma Street gallery until June 24.

Still painting fresh, vivid and inspiring large-scale works in her home studio redolent with a personal symbol structure developed over a lifetime, West trained originally as a school teacher in Winnipeg in the 1950s.

After years of service in the teaching profession while raising a family, she followed her other passion by taking art courses while moving with her husband’s job in the oil and gas industry. Exploring the world of art in courses at Red Deer College and the University of Alberta, West eventually undertook a bachelor of fine art at the University of Calgary.

Lineham House curator Cheryl Taylor said the gallery is fortunate to have this absolute treasure in a post-war and contemporary artist who remains active within her retirement community of Okotoks.

Following years of full-time caring for her husband, West’s newest work, as fresh and exciting as anything produced in her lengthy career, is featured in a well-deserved solo show, Taylor said.

“Let Roseanne West remove the grey lens from your eyes that dulls the senses and tones down colour,” said Rod Schuhart at Art Connections Calgary. “Her work restores the raw vibrancy of the objects that share our world. From waves crashing on a tumulious shore to a dignified still life on a kitchen table, everything brought under Roseanne's gaze demands attention, springing back to radiance and life.”
