Syrian classical guitar trio, the Orontes Guitarists, understand the power that music holds to build bridges and to heal.
Like the river from which they draw their name, the trio crosses boundaries and borders, influencing and being influenced in return.
High River Gift of Music is bringing the trio to the High River United Church on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
The group had a promising start in Beirut, appearing at venues such as the Syrian National Symphony Orchestra and the French Embassy before civil war intruded. Thanks to the Artist Protection Fund, which helps musicians in areas of conflict, the group has found refuge in Canada.
Hailing from different cultural and religious traditions themselves, the trio is keenly aware of how music transcends the barriers between us. The Orontes Guitarists perform a diverse repertoire, from classical and South American music to their true passion: arranging Middle Eastern and Arabic music for classical guitar.
By introducing these rich traditions to new audiences, they bring a fresh and vibrant sound to the classical guitar world.
Adult/senior tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door; youth are $10. Tickets are available at highrivergiftofmusic.com or from the church office on weekday mornings.
High River Gift of Music is a non-profit society that has been bringing extraordinary classical music to High River and community since 2009.
