DATEBOOK: 24 hours to make a horror film

Teams are given a horror genre, prop and line of dialogue to use and will then have 24 hours to write, shoot and edit their film.

The Town of Okotoks’ Environmental Education Centre hosts Nature Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. where activities focus on a different theme weekly. Upcoming topics include: Weather versus Climate (Oct. 13). okotoks.ca   

   

The 24-Hour Horror Filmmaking Challenge will run from Friday, Oct. 13 to Sunday, Oct. 15. Teams are given a horror genre, prop and line of dialogue to use and will then have 24 hours to write, shoot and edit their film. All films that are completed before the deadline and meet the guidelines of the challenge will be screened that same weekend online. Awards will be presented in several categories. okotoks.ca

The Foothills Writers Group will host its second annual Local Author Bookfair at the Okotoks Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Authors will be in attendance to discuss and sign their books. Indigo Down and Birthday Girl will be the special guest hosts when the Rocky Horror Picture Show is screened at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door, and include a props package. okotoks.ca  

   

Okotoks green thumbs are invited to a workshop covering everything you need to know about Alberta's unique seasonal shifts and how to make the most of them in your garden. Fall Yard Mastery: Prepping Your Outdoor Space for the Season will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Environmental Education Centre. Register at okotoks.ca. 

 

The Okotoks & District Chamber of Commerce is marking Small Business Month with Adapt to Excel with keynote speaker David Proctor on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Okotoks Alliance Church. Cost is $30 for members and $35 for guests. okotokschamber.ca 

 
The Okotoks Public Library offers free showings of family-friendly films for PD Day Movie. The next one is on Friday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. when Hotel Transylvania: Transformania will be screened. okotokslibrary.ca 
 

The Medicine Shoppe will be at the Okotoks Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A Watercolour Pet Portraits class will be held at the Okotoks Art Gallery on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. Artist educator Ashley Gaboury will show how to create one-of-a-kind keepsakes of your four-legged family members. Beginners welcome. Class costs $50. okotoks.ca

Discover what lurks downtown after dark during the annual Ghost Tour hosted by the Okotoks Museum and Archives and the Okotoks and District Historical Society from Oct. 26-28. Nerf Wars - Halloween! Will be held at the Okotoks Public Library on Friday, Oct. 27 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Bring your Nerf gun, ammo and eye protection for this special after-hours event. You are welcome to dress up in costume. Event is free and is for ages eight to 12. Registration will open on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. okotokslibrary.ca  

  

Mystical Masquerade, the Foothills Country Hospice Society’s Gratitude and Giving Gala, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Foothills Centennial Centre. The annual gala features an evening full of mystery, excitement and fun in support of hospice. countryhospice.org   

   

The Okotoks Museum and Archives hosts a free Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The family-friendly hunt is an excellent opportunity to explore current exhibitions in an engaging and accessible way. okotoks.ca  

  

The Sheep River parkrun, a free weekly five-kilometre run/walk, is held every Saturday at 9 a.m. The loop begins and ends at the picnic shelter in Sheep River Park, and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. sheepriverparkrun.ca  

   
OM Chanting is held every Saturday at the Okotoks Public Library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is an ancient, dynamic meditation technique which helps us realign with nature and existence. It is free, open to all. No experience required. Bring water to drink and energize. okotokslibrary.ca

Opened to coincide with the 2023 Alberta Summer Games co-hosted by Okotoks and Diamond Valley, the exhibit details how sports have always played an integral part in the town’s history. okotoks.ca   

   

Foothills Writers Group (formerly the Indie Author Group Okotoks) meets every third Thursday at the Okotoks Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m. The group is a community of local authors whose goal is to encourage and support writers during their creative journey. The Okotoks Chess Club meets every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Okotoks Public Library. The free club aims to improve chess play and maintains a friendly environment where learning takes priority over winning. Chess sets and clocks are available. All ages welcome, drop in. The LEGO Club meets every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. at the Okotoks Public Library. Kids aged six to 12 can enjoy playing with LEGO and meeting new friends in the free, drop-in activity. okotokslibrary.ca
