Diamond Valley celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day

The Sheep River Library hosted a day of Indigenous culture, food and activities

The Sheep River Library hosted events for National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21.

The indoor programming was a welcome sight on a rainy weekend for many.

Starting off the day at the library was a presentation by Walter White Bear, a renowned Cree singer-songwriter and educator.

White Bear talked about indigenous perspectives on life and creation and brought awareness to the crowd of attentive listeners.

After the presentation the crowd enjoyed some fresh bannock prepared by indigenous chef and cultural facilitator Russ Baker at the nearby Flare ‘n Derrick.

Afterwards Baker led the children of the group into Indigenous games and thought Indigenous culture and perspectives while entertaining the crowd.

Simultaneously, a fireplace acoustic jam took place inside library’s main space. Multiple musicians, including White Bear, joined in to perform in an impromptu jam session.
