Fourth Avenue in High River could be part of an entertainment district if a proposal goes ahead to run a pilot project this year.

A downtown entertainment district could be on tap in High River.

Entertainment districts are designated public areas where adults can consume alcohol within defined boundaries at certain times, the Town said in a media release on Feb. 26.

The proposed district in High River would be operational during special events, and it would be piloted from June to December of this year, if it is approved.

A survey on the proposal is available online and feedback will be sought from the public and business owners to gauge interest in the proposal.

There will be an information booth set up at the 2024 Showcase High River event on March 2, the Town said.

The district would be in the town’s downtown area. The Town said alcoholic beverages would be available from licensed establishments in non-glass containers and would need to be consumed inside the district.

The Town of Okotoks proposed a similar district last year but it was defeated following significant public opposition.
