The Town of Okotoks has received a $100,000 federal grant to help build an inclusive playground, but the Howard Park project hasn't been approved yet.

The Town of Okotoks has received federal funding for an inclusive playground.

Howard Park is getting a skateboard park this year, but it could also become home to a new playground next year.

A skate park will be constructed this summer on the site of an aging playground, which the Town of Okotoks says has reached the end of its life.

“We’re excited to embark on this project to further enhance the recreational amenities available at Howard Park,” said Rod March, the Town’s parks manager. “The old playground has served us well, but it's time to usher in a new era of recreational amenities that promote an active and healthy lifestyle for all residents.”

The removal of the playground has caused concern among families in the area, sparking chatter on social media and calls for a new play structure to be erected at the park adjacent to Foothills Composite High School.

A Town of Okotoks press release issued on March 1 suggested that it might become a reality.

The Town said that feedback from community engagement, including an open house held on Feb. 6, indicated a strong desire to retain the playground at Howard Park.

It also stated that it has received a $100,000 grant from the federal Enabling Accessibility Fund towards adding an inclusive and accessible playground for Howard Park.

That project will be considered for Okotoks council approval later this year. If approved, a new playground may be added to the site in 2025.
