An open house is being held this evening for a solar project that’s proposed to be built near Okotoks.
Enerfín Energy Company of Canada (Enerfin) plans to build the Big Rock Solar Project in Foothills County, about 10 kilometres southwest of Okotoks.
According to the project website, the 90-megawatt project would generate enough electricity to power about 24,000 homes.
The project, on 430 acres, would have over 200,000 solar panels and a 40-megawatt battery storage system.
An Enerfin spokesperson said the project is in the engagement phase and the company is consulting with nearby landowners and the larger community.
An open house is planned on Thursday, Feb. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. at East Longview Hall.
The company hopes to submit an application to the Alberta Utilities Commission in the next few months and would then seek a development permit from Foothills County, a spokesperson said.
Enerfin plans to start construction in 2025. If approved, the project is expected to be up and running in 2026.
The company said project development was not seriously impacted by the renewable energy pause announced by the provincial government last summer.
The pause is expected to be lifted at the end of the month, and Enerfin said it has no information on potential new requirements that may be in place.
