The United Conservative incumbent, who won a second term in Highwood in Monday’s provincial election, was also the choice of local students who participated in Student Vote Alberta.

Students at more than 20 schools in the Highwood riding took part in the province-wide initiative.

Totals released late Monday show Sigurdson received 1,686 votes for almost 56 per cent of the popular vote.

NDP candidate Jessica Hallam received 990 votes for almost 33 per cent, while Mike Lorusso of the Wildrose Independence Party got 337 votes for 11 per cent.

In Monday’s provincial election, Sigurdson received 69 per cent of the popular vote, followed by Hallam with 29 per cent and Lorusso with two per cent.

More than 170,000 elementary and high school students participated in Student Vote Alberta throughout the province.

After learning about government and democracy, researching the parties and platforms, and debating the future of the province, students cast their ballots for the official candidates running in their school’s electoral division.

More than 170,000 votes were reported from almost 1,100 schools.

Province-wide results in Student Vote Alberta showed the NDP forming a majority government by winning 47 seats with 42 per cent of the popular vote.

The UCP got 40 per cent of the vote to claim 39 seats.

No other parties won seats, but independent candidate Funky Banjoko was elected in Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo.

The Green Party received 6.6 per cent of the popular vote, followed by the Alberta Party (2.3) and the Solidarity Movement of Alberta (2.3).
