Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Okotoks and surrounding areas this morning.

The statement says there’s potential for significant snowfall mid-week, although snowfall amounts are expected to vary widely depending on location.

Today’s forecast calls for a risk of a thunderstorm this afternoon or evening with rain changing to snow. Snowfall accumulations of up to 10 cm are forecast along the foothills.

Tomorrow, snow or rain is expected to end near noon with rain showers or flurries at night.

Snow or rain is expected to continue Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures remain well below seasonal.

Conditions are expected to warm up considerably by the weekend with highs reaching 15C and 16C.

The special weather statement for the region says up to 25 cm of snow is possible by Thursday morning, with the highest amounts falling west of Highway 2 over higher terrain.

The snow will be heavy and wet, and may be mixed with rain in some areas, so total snowfall amounts will vary widely.
