Bevan brace lifts Cavalry FC past Vancouver

Soccer: Cavs shake off early goal to defeat first time visitors 3-1

A three-goal first-half barrage ensured the Cavs made Vancouver FC’s first visit one to forget.

Striker Myer Bevan scored twice and set up another in the opening 45 minutes as Cavalry FC (2-6-1) knocked off Vancouver FC 3-1 in the Canadian Premier League expansion team’s maiden voyage to Spruce Meadows’ ATCO Field on June 11.

“It’s good to finally get the two goals, but it’s all about the performance today,” Bevan told OneSoccer following the match. “It’s been coming for the boys, we work day in and day out and I think this performance today we deserved it a lot.”

Uncharacteristically, the Cavalry had to shake off an inauspicious start to the contest.

The visitors struck first with Shaan Hundal cashing in on a miscue at the back from the hosts just four minutes from the first whistle for the forward’s league-leading fifth tally of the season.

Not to be outdone, Bevan scored twice in an 11-minute span to move into joint-top scorer in the CPL.

First, the New Zealand international quickly reacted to a loose ball after a collision to comfortably cash in on an odd-man break.

At the 21-minute mark, Goteh Ntignee played provider with a darting run from the left wing to put one on a tee for Bevan.

The industrious forward nearly had a first-half hat trick with his shot hitting the crossbar and attacking midfielder Sergio Camargo there to clean up the rebound with a diving header into the back of the net.

“It’s a front four and we’ve shown throughout the whole season that everyone has had their moment of brilliance,” said Bevan of the potent attack. “I thought today everyone was brilliant, Goteh young boy coming in and I thought he was excellent, (Ali) Musse is still creating problems every week and he’s one of, if not, the best player in the league and Sergi, it’s good to have him back fully fit and building off everything.

“The two goals I scored today was credit to all of the boys.”

The three goals, a season high for the Cavs, moves the team into second in the CPL with 13 on the campaign and, more importantly, keeps the squad within striking distance of Pacific, York United and Forge at the top of the table.

“It’s about putting a full 90 together,” Bevan said. “I think we’ve been brilliant in parts of the game, but today I thought we were brilliant throughout. Credit to all of us, the staff, the players and I think now it’s just something we can build off.”

The Cavalry travel east to close the week against the Haligonians at Wanderers Ground on June 17 and return to Spruce Meadows for a rematch with York United on June 24.
