Big Rock Skating Club’s flag will be flying at the upcoming provincials.
Five members from the local figure skating club – Marcella Maron, Charlotte Kitt, Isla along with Anastasiya and Sofiya Oliynyk — punched their ticket to the 2025 StarSkate Championships with strong performances at Lethbridge’s Star Series event.
Kitt struck silver in the Star 5 U13 freeskate, Anastasiya won silver in both the Star 6 freeskate and Star 5 artistic with Sofiya winning gold in Star 9 freeskate and bronze in Star 10 freeskate.
Maron won bronze in Star 7 freeskate with Isla placing sixth in Star 5 U10 freeskate.
Presley Whitfield placed third in the Star 4 U13 freeskate event as Big Rock came home with a total of seven medals from Lethbridge.
The freeskate programs are judged primarily on technical difficulty with more complex spins, sequences and high-level jumps whereas the artistic events reward presentation and feeling through the music.
Maron and Kitt are returning veterans at provincials with the latter a silver medallist at the 2023 iteration of the event while this will be Isla’s championship debut.
The provincial event features the top qualifying athletes from the Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
Big Rock Skating Club, led by coaches Barb Westhaver and Liat Kobetitch, is based in Okotoks and Foothills and offers a variety of training opportunities and mentorship from experienced athletes.
The club also proudly supports the training of Londyn Kachur and Vlad Kryzhanivskyi, the number two ranked Juvenile pairs team in the province over the past two years.
