Deuces continue to be wild for Sergio Camargo.
Cavalry FC’s attacking midfielder scored in the second minute for the second game in a row and doubled up his output on the day with a second half tally to secure the brace in a 2-1 triumph over York United on a scorching Sunday at Spruce Meadows’ ATCO Field.
"I'm taking my chances, today I was able to play from the eight position so I was able to drive more than I usually do and you can tell with that first goal that I wouldn't be in that position normally, underneath the ball to take that step in and take that shot," said Camargo in the post-game press conference. "I'm just shooting more, running into the box more and it's not just me.
"(Ali) Musse and Tobi (Warschewski) are also firing on all cylinders and that helps everyone because it takes the pressure off eachother and we all pick up the slack whenever someone else is getting double-teamed."
Camargo opened the account Sunday with a well struck low shot from outside the box on a set up from left winger Jay Herdman bringing the 5,114 supporters, a regular season record for the Cavs, out of their seats.
The 30-year-old made it two just six minutes into the second half, Camargo’s first brace since the inaugural 2019 campaign, with an aggressive pursuit in front of goal on the second phase of a set piece.
York cut the lead in half just a minute later through Massimo Ferrin on a header and the visitors did threaten at times, but couldn’t secure the equalizer in the second half.
Centre back Eryk Kobza, sidelined previously to injury, made his first start of the season alongside Callum Montgomery with both defenders making goal saving clearances in the victory.
The Cavs were playing without three key contributors all on international duty with Caniggia Elva called up to for Saint Lucia, Shamit Shome for Bangladesh and Mihail Gherasimencov reporting to Moldova's U21 side.
"Momentum is one thing, scoreline is the other and I think we've been in games where we've probably played a bit better and not got the result and we're in a results business," said Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.
"Right now, I've got to credit the lads for digging in because probably half the starting lineup on a better day probably wouldn't have started, but I've asked them to go out and do a job on probably the hottest day so far. With international duty, the list of injuries, and they did it.
"I've got to thank them for that because that wasn't an easy game against a side in York that did respond very well and put us on the back-foot for too long, but we found a way."
Including cup play, Cavalry is on an eight-game unbeaten run and is now six games without a loss in the CPL.
The Cavs (5-2-2) are now tied for second in the league table with the Halifax Wanderers with 17 points and make the trip to Nova Scotia for their next matchup on June 14.
Cavalry FC’s next home game is June 21 versus Pacific FC.
