Foothills Ringette zones in on historic banners

“It’s just a huge achievement. We’re the underdogs always so we’re making a name for ourselves in ringette across the province and it’s pretty exciting.”

A season of firsts has culminated in a pair of historic finishes for Foothills Ringette.

The Foothills Ringette Association brought home its first two zone championship with the Foothills Fierce U12 B winning the Big Country Zone 2 banner on March 18 and the Foothills Snipers repeating the feat at the U14 C level one week later.

“We’ve been working so hard for so many years, pouring our love for this sport into the community,” said Foothills Fierce head coach Katy Thompson. “I really think it just showcases coming together as a community and the growth that we’ve been able to see, the commitment from the coaches and the families and the girls.

“It’s just a huge achievement. We’re the underdogs always so we’re making a name for ourselves in ringette across the province and it’s pretty exciting.”

The Zone 2 competition features all of the surrounding area teams, with Calgary having its own city championship, including Foothills, Indus, Cochrane, Strathmore and Airdrie.

Foothills faced off against the Indus Lightning in the U12 B final and skated to a 10-2 victory at the Piper Arena.

“We packed that rink, it was so exciting,” Thompson said. “The teams that have come upon us in our zone play have been very competitive so I would say the girls went above and beyond to get to 10 (goals).”

One week later, the FRA had another banner Saturday at the Piper Arena.

The Foothills Snipers lit up the scoreboard with an 11-3 triumph over the Cochrane Rockies on March 25 to win the Big Country U14 C Zone 2 banner on home ice.

Earlier in the season, the Snipers made association history by winning the FRA’s first tournament title at a competition in Sherwood Park. Foothills then hosted its first major tournament, the Foothills Freeze, in early February.
