Cavs and Valour play to combative draw at Spruce Meadows

The Cavalry have completed a full month without a loss in the Canadian Premier League.

Cavalry (1-5-1) extended its unbeaten run to six games in the CPL with a 1-1 draw versus Valour FC Sunday afternoon at Spruce Meadows on the heels of a midweek victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps which ultimately saw them go out in the Canadian Championship via the away goals aggregate rule.

“It was a busy week for us,” Cavalry FC right back Fraser Aird told OneSoccer. “It’s a competition we want to do well in, the chance to play against an MLS side and put our best up against that and we’ve done well. We gave everything on Tuesday night to try and get through to the next round of the tie and it wasn’t enough.

“We maybe looked a little bit leggy at times today, but there’s no excuse. We should have played better, especially in the first half. Second half, we gave them everything and just couldn’t find that winner.”

Not for lack of trying.

The Cavs came close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions following the restart, highlighted by winger Lleyton Brooks’ curling low shot right off the post, midfielder Shamit Shome’s darting run into the box and striker Malcolm Shaw’s low left footed strike with 10 minutes left in regulation time.

In the first half, Valour earned the breakthrough with midfielder Juan Pablo Sanchez finding space on the outside of the box and smashing in a well-placed strike under the crossbar.

Aird drew the hosts even eight minutes later after his shot from outside of the box was redirected in off the Valour defensive line in the 39th minute.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t go on to win the game,” Aird said. “It’s always nice on a personal level to get a goal, but the team performance I don’t think was there today. We need to do a lot more, especially at home. Those are the games that we should be winning.”

Cavalry FC is back on the pitch on June 1 with a trip to Vancouver Island to take on Pacific FC. The Cavs’ next home date is June 8 versus Forge FC.
