Breakaway roping makes Stampede debut with southern Alberta cowgirl winning day one

Alberta stood tallest in a historic debut at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth on Friday.

Breakaway roping, which was previously held as the Rocky Mountain Cup, a separate event from the rodeo, is the first event added to the rodeo in 46 years.

The other day one winners include: Oregon's Mason Stuller in bareback; Wyoming's Brody Cress in saddle bronc; Idaho's Tristen Hutchings in bull riding; Nebraska's Riley Pruitt in tie-down roping; Florida's Kyle Irwin in steer wrestling; Idaho's Anita Ellis in barrel racing and Texas' Kash Loyd in novice bareback.

High River saddle bronc rider Lucas Macza scored a round of 77 and sits eighth in the standings with two more days of action in Pool A.

Pool B, which runs July 7-9, features Longview barrel racer Bradi Whiteside an Okotoks bull rider Jordan Hansen. Millarville bronc rider Layton Green is in the mix for Pool C, July 10-12. The championship round of the rodeo is July 13.
