Kelts perfectly rotten in High River

The only thing rotten about a Millarville cowboy’s ride last night was the name of the horse. Same Kelts had the top ride in the saddle bronc event at the Guy Weadick Memorial Rodeo on Thursday when he rode Rotten Ralph to an 80.5 in High River.

“It won’t win me first-place (for the four-day) rodeo, but it should get me some money,” Kelts said. “I was really happy with the horse. It’s a Ralph Bergen horse, and I have been able to ride him a few times in Nanton for practice. So, I knew I was getting a good horse.”

Bergen, who lives in the Aldersyde area, said it was a case of a good horse being rode by a good cowboy. In tie-down roping, Steele DePaoli of Longview had the fastest time of the night at 8.7 seconds.

There is no day money for the Guy Weadick Rodeo. The prize money will be distributed after Sunday’s performance in High River.

Chuckwagon races

High River’s Jason Glass is comfortably in the top 10 after the first night of racing at the North American Chuckwagon Championships in his hometown on Thursday.

Glass had the seventh fastest time among the 36 drivers at 1:18.16. Okotoks’ Mark Sutherland, who was running in the same heat as Glass, finished 28th overall at 1:21.49.

Jordie Fike, who moved to High River about a month ago, is taking a liking to his new hometown. He finished ninth overall at 1:18.34 seconds.

High River’s Brian Mayan was 33rd after toppling a barrel. His time was 1:26.23.

The fastest time of the evening went to Kirk Sutherland at 1:16.95.

The Guy Weadick rodeo and the chuckwagon races continue until Sunday.

The rodeo starts at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night with the chuckwagons to follow at approximately 8 p.m.

On Sunday the rodeo starts at 2 p.m. with the wagons rolling at around 4 p.m.
