Undefeated Falcons soar to zone championship

Rugby: Foothills bests Bow Valley to earn provincial qualification

The Foothills Falcons have flocked to the provincial championships with an undefeated record intact.

Foothills bested Bow Valley 21-15 on May 31 to claim the senior girls rugby South Central Zone Tier 1 banner and punch its ticket to the ASAA Provincial Rugby Championships with a 21-game unbeaten mark.

“This team has had a lot of practice and really deserves this because we put a lot of effort and a lot of hard work into this. I'm really proud of the team,” said Falcons winger Nina Fenner, a Grade 10 student. “I think what’s led to our success is that from last year we definitely raised the commitment levels and came together not only as a team, but as a community.

"We came together really quickly and bonded naturally because there's a lot of girls on our team who've actually never played rugby at all and we just took them in and helped them learn the game really fast."

The zone final combatants previously met during the opening fixture of the regular season in mid-April, a 20-20 tie in what has been the only game the Falcons haven’t outright won this season in all competitions.

“It was such good competition, they showed good sportsmanship and pride on the field and it was a great game to play,” Fenner said. “It was a very nailbiting game, it was definitely nerve-racking on the sidelines watching the team so close to defeat and so close to victory at the same time.”

The Calgary Rugby Union will be the site of the ASAA Provincial Rugby Championships on June 9-10.

“Provincials is going to be an adventure and I’m excited for it,” Fenner added. “I think our team definitely has a chance and I’m just really excited, no matter how it turns out, to get the opportunity to go.”
