Undefeated Knights charge into league finals, zones

Soccer: HTA and Canmore to lock horns in championship

Two banners are on the line this week for a team with a habit of winning them.

The Holy Trinity Academy Knights put their undefeated record to the test as the first seed going into the Foothills Athletic Council senior girls soccer final versus the Canmore Wolverines in advance of a shot at glory at zones.

“The game plan there is really just maintain our structure and control everything through the middle and look for opportunities to put the ball through,” said Knights coach Nathan Len.

“We’ve gone away from the individual skill game plan, where you basically have your top player take the ball and try and get through everybody, and are recognizing that we’re a much better team as a collective.”

In the bronze medal match, the fourth-seed Foothills Falcons will travel to Strathmore to take on the Spartans.

The Knights have downed the Wolverines twice, with a 9-0 margin, during the condensed regular season.

HTA won all six of its regular season matches by a combined margin of 58-2.

“We’ve moved things around, tried to figure out what works,” the coach said. “There’s a few (positions) we got right off the beginning because that’s typically what they play in club and some of the newer players we brought in, we’ve had a little trial and error and really landed on a spot where everybody is shining.

“We’ve found really good defenders that have been unbelievable and didn’t really understand the position at the start of the year and same on the front end.”

The South Central Zone championships run Oct. 13-14 in Cochrane. The tournament will see the top-two finishers out of the Foothills and Rocky View leagues duke it out on the pitch.

“It’s going to be a different calibre of teams that you get at zones,” Len said. “Really, the start for the ramp up started (Thursday) where we focused more on our structure and how we wanted to play and really let people into the roles they’re actually going to end up in.

“It’s what you can do to prepare for that next game, which is the championship and then into zones.”
