Though under far from ideal circumstances, there are many ways to pay tribute on Nov. 11 even if that means not being there in person for a ceremony.
It’s truly unfortunate that for two years running Remembrance Day festivities are being curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Legions in Okotoks and Turner Valley have worked hard to ensure there are ways for the general public to view ceremonies, primarily through online streams.
The Okotoks Legion will be having a small ceremony with approximately 50 guests at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre on Nov. 11 with it being streamed via the Legion’s Facebook page.
In Turner Valley, veterans will be getting together for a three-hour window on Nov. 11 with a small ceremony at the cenotaph outside the legion at 10:50 a.m.
A formal ceremony has also been recorded and can be viewed on the Legion’s Facebook page from 10 to 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day.
There are many other ways to support, whether that’s taking time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans or making a donation to a poppy campaign at the legions.
Last year’s campaign in Okotoks raised over $103,000, an incredible tribute to the community and the efforts of everyone behind the scenes.
It’s heartening to see the crosses with Canadian flags lined up along Northridge Drive and at the Foothills Composite High School as well.
Though showing support may look different this year, paying respect can continue to take many forms as we look forward to a return to the Remembrance Day ceremonies of yesteryear in the near future.
