LETTER: Can’t plan outdoor events because of the stink

High River residents pleading for the right actions to be taken to prevent town from becoming a place no one wants to visit or live in.

Dear Editor,

We moved to High River in October of 2021. We had no idea of the stink problem in town until after we moved in.

I grew up on a farm with animals — pigs, chickens, cattle, horses. I am very aware of the “farm” smell and it has never bothered me. As far as I’m concerned, chicken and pig manure are way more pungent than cattle manure. What we smell in High River is putrid.

Here are our reasons for opposition:

1. We are unable to open windows at night during warm weather because the stink fills the house.

2. We are unable to plan outside events because no one knows when the stink will hit. My family doesn’t want to spend time visiting us here.

3. I have never had allergies before moving here. Now I spend mornings sneezing, blowing my nose and suffering from burning eyes.

4. I feel this problem will/is driving down the value of my property.

5. Rating the smell from one to 10 is unreliable as different people have different levels of reaction to odours. My reaction is to gag most of the time the stink hits.

We, as a town, are pleading for the right actions to be taken to prevent our town from becoming a place no one wants to visit or live in.
