LETTER: Clearing up independent living misconceptions

Independent living is just that … independent living. You come and go as you please with all the benefits of a safe and secure, quality living facility.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to debunk or clear up the misconceptions of senior independent living facilities.

My wife and I moved into one such facility three months ago. The previous misconceptions that we had about independent living evaporated away pretty quickly.

I can safely say the majority of people think these types of facilities are for people who have aged-out or require 24-hour care. This stigma could not be further from the truth. Yes, there are facilities for people who need that degree of care, but it is not the case with independent living facilities.

Independent living is just that … independent living. You come and go as you please with all the benefits of a safe and secure, quality living facility, including good quality meals being served by friendly staff and your suite being cleaned on a weekly basis with fresh bed linens and fresh towels being supplied. Anyway, such is the case at the Medicine Tree Manor here in High River.

Why would you not want to live in a secure newer building with beautiful grounds, great staff and a daily activity itinerary that matches the activities on a cruise ship? Our freedom has not been restricted in the least and being seniors, we are free from the daily mundane tasks such as cooking, apartment/house cleaning and the daily and yearly upkeep of yard and building maintenance.

I forgot to mention having to pay taxes, utility bills and the ever-increasing cost of power/gas bills.

Misconceptions cleared up.
