LETTER: Okotoks should follow Nanton's lead on speeders

Speeding in our small towns has gone on far too long.

Dear Editor,

Kudos to the Town of Nanton for addressing the problem of speeders on its streets.

A recent report from the Nanton RCMP reveals that officers gave out 200 tickets in all of 2023. In a recent blitz, 196 tickets were given out in one month. One officer admitted being embarrassed by these statistics.

I am extremely pleased that the Town and its law enforcement have stepped up to deal with this issue. Speeding in our small towns has gone on far too long.

The Town of Okotoks needs a wakeup call as speeding, along with running red lights, is rampant here. Complaints and letters to Town council and law enforcement seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

Some citizens have brought forth the issues to council to no avail. Nothing has changed, much to the frustration of many citizens.

There are extra signs all over town with the posted speed limit and telling people to slow down so obviously council is aware of the problem but seems reluctant to deal with it.

When you can't proceed on a green light for fear that someone is running a red light, when you are afraid to cross the street at a controlled crosswalk and when you worry about young children in school zones and seniors trying to navigate road crossings, there is a big problem.

We have to stop worrying about the whiners saying that speed traps are a cash cow. Don't do the crime if you don't want to pay the fine.

To the Town of Nanton, I say congratulations on your success and keep up the good work. Keep spreading the word that you have zero tolerance for speeding in your town. Who knows, maybe it will catch on in other towns and safety will prevail.
