LETTER: Plan ahead and capture the rain

Dear Editor,

Recently our mayor has been drawing our attention to the limited water supply available to the town.  This looks as though some very prudent outdoor water use will be necessary this year.

Living on an acreage for 45 years, I was totally responsible for providing and maintaining my own water supply. To protect the well supply, I installed an above ground, 6,000-litre tank that filled with rainwater from the roofs. This provided the water for my 1,200-square-foot garden and was better for the plants than the well water.

After moving into town two and a half years ago, I made plans to provide rainwater for my vegetable raised beds and my flowers. I had some barrels but I also purchased two larger ones and the Town refunded about one-third of the cost, crediting my Town services account.

Now I have storage for about 1,000 litres (if it rains) which should be adequate for my outdoor supply.

Plan ahead.
