Once again it is time to kick start the Christmas season and Okotoks will be alive with activities this weekend.

Friday it starts off with Light Up Okotoks with live performances at the Olde Towne Plaza at 5:30 p.m. and the opening ceremonies at 6:45 p.m. Santa arrives then and the tree is lit at 7 p.m. During the evening there will be horse drawn wagon rides throughout downtown, live reindeer, fire pits, petting zoo, ice sculptures, hot chocolate and so much more.

Not to mention great savings in all the stores to help you get the Christmas gift season off and running.

At 9 p.m. a fantastic fireworks display will complete the evening’s fun.

Also craft sales will be taking place on Friday and Saturday at the Elks Hall and the Okotoks Library. A fun weekend with something for everyone.

This Thursday, Nov. 15 is an 80th Birthday Roast to honour Jim “Bearcat” Murray. The event is slated for the Foothills Community Centre in Okotoks and will feature lots of Flames players from the days when Bearcat was the trainer. Should be a blast. For more information go to www.okotoksoilers.ca

Thinking about Bearcat brings me around to the ridiculous NHL lockout we are living under.

At this point with all the games that have been cancelled I can’t imagine either side will be a winner at the end of the day. All I know for sure is both sides have let their fans down and should not only refund the season ticket holders for games missed but should discount the balance of the season for putting us through such a silly time.

Politics continue to be interesting in Alberta. I see the opposition is not going to sit back and allow Premier Alison Redford’s Conservatives borrow money for infrastructure without a big debate. We all remember former premier Ralph Klein paying off Alberta’s debt and suggesting we stay in the black from that day forward.

Interesting topic and with lower than expected oil prices and huge amounts of infrastructure required it looks to me like the Tories will have no choice but to borrow.

The Christmas campaign organized by HC Pharmacy to help seniors in the area still needs your help.

There has been great volunteer support for the campaign which is collecting food and donations for local seniors this Christmas. However, organizers are still looking for people to nominate seniors who could use a hand this holiday season. This is a great initiative and for more information contact HC Pharmacy at 403-995-1080.
