Stampede time is here again

The sky is clearing and the long range forecast shows nothing but blue sky throughout this years Calgary Stampede. Can you even imagine that this is the 100th year! I bet it has come a long way in those years and this one hopes to be the best ever.

Can you even imagine that this is the 100th year! I bet it has come a long way in those years and this one hopes to be the best ever. The parade will kick things off on Friday morning. It is also a time for plenty of get togethers so please remember to play safe and drive careful at this time of the year. Lots of extra small ones running around and enjoying the summer break.

It has been a tough season so far for our Okotoks Dawgs baseball team as they have had to endure a lot of rain for the first half of the summer season. The good news is they just keep getting better and have now won six in a row and clawed their way to a tie for first place in their division.

The team to beat this year seems to be Regina Red Sox. We play them in Regina next week for a couple games. Hopefully we will play them in the playoffs here at Seaman Stadium.

Canada Day was a great day with big crowds at The Millarville Races and other events including the Blackie Days Parade.

A crowd of more than 4,000 attended the Dawgs game and fireworks later. Due to a thunder storm passing through there was a rain delay which got the game over late and the fireworks didn’t get underway until about 11:30pm. All in all, a great day.

More than 20 years ago a wagon wheel was removed from the front of the Wheel office. Well, on Sunday a fellow came up to me at the Dawgs game to remind me of that story.

He recalled I mentioned it in my corner and asked for it’s safe return. Turns out he and his buddies after having a pop or two decided it would be cool to remove it and roll it down the street.

After reading my column they got feeling a little guilty I suppose and did bring it back. I thanked him for doing that and those two wheels are still at the door. I suppose that is why some people call the paper the “Wagon Wheel.”
