Stamps will bring back Grey Cup

It is only fitting the 100th Grey Cup will include the Calgary Stampeders and the Toronto Agronauts.

It is only fitting the 100th Grey Cup will include the Calgary Stampeders and the Toronto Agronauts. I know there are some Rider fans who are green with envy, but the Stamps have the best fans in the CFL and there will be plenty of red and white in the stands at the Roger’s Centre next Sunday cheering on our team.

Hopefully, Toronto fans get out and support their team because this could be an incredible event with the home team in the centennial Grey Cup game along with a proud western franchise.

Calgary is the hottest team in the CFL right now and after a scare from those pesky Riders I don’t think anyone can challenge the Stamps. Calgary will bring home the Grey Cup on Sunday and it will not even be close. Calgary 35, Toronto 21. Go Stamps go!

Whether you are enjoying some pop or something a little stronger during this year’s Grey Cup or over the holidays keep Okotoks KidSport in mind.

The Okotoks bottle depot allows its customers to direct their refunds to local charities such as KidSport, a group assisting families with the fees for their children to play sports. In 2010 KidSport helped 117 local kids play the games they love.

Lets help out some future CFL players by helping them get involved in sport.

The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer is going to make a stop in Okotoks next year.

The popular ride allows people to bike the scenic foothills while raising money for a great cause. The route always takes in some of the most beautiful scenery southern Alberta has to offer and next year they will treat riders to our own little piece of heaven. The 2013 Ride to Conquer Cancer takes place on June 22-23 and will include an overnight stop in Okotoks. Lets make the riders feel welcome by supporting riders looking to raise money for life-saving research.

Two weeks ago John Paul II Collegiate hosted a food drive to help the community of Brooks which was devastated with the temporary closure of the XL Foods processing plant.

The students got up early on a Saturday and collected food all morning. Southland Transportation then bused the to Brooks for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. It took several men more than an hour and a half to unload all the food from Okotoks. Not only did the donations fill the food bank’s shelves, but it filled the entire floor about two to four boxes high. In all, the students, teachers and parents at John Paul II Collegiate collected more than 6,000 pounds of food. Well done and they have set the bar high this holiday season.

The Sheep River Health Trust is hosting its first Avenue of Trees this year and all the trees are now on display at the Okotoks Recreation Centre. Make sure you stop by and take a look at these amazing trees put together by local businesses and organizations. Trees are also on display at the Sheep River Library in Turner Valley and Oilfields Hospital in Black Diamond. You also have the chance to buy one of these trees so make sure to have a peek.

There will also be Christmas parties to celebrate the Avenue of Trees. The Okotoks celebration will be at the library in Turner Valley on 14 and a second party will be Dec. 15 at the rec centre in Okotoks. For more details see the story on pagez ??

Congratulations to Okotoks’ Denise Rose on being elected Chair of the Canadian Education Association's Board of Directors. Denise is the superintendent of the Foothills School Division and a worthwhile selection. Check out next week’s Wheel for a story on her appointment.
