The biggest party planner, community champion and kindest heart in Okotoks is taking her leave.
Marg Cox is retiring and although most locals likely know who she is – she swept Okotoks citizen of the year for six years in this paper’s Best of the Foothills survey – and for those who don’t you likely attended an event she organized.
Cox is the force behind Town events like Sports Day and the parade, the Terry Fox run, Light Up Okotoks and many others. In fact Cox is behind 30 events that happen in Okotoks. That is more than two events every month that the people in this area can enjoy all thanks to one little lady.
Not only does Marg plan events for the Town of Okotoks, she can be seen at many other events, held by local schools and organizations that know who to call when you need a bang-up good time.
In addition, she sits on the board that saw the Foothills Country Hospice get up and running. It seems only fitting that such an angel was part of the movement to help people live out their final days amongst their family and friends.
Here at the Western Wheel we have also been a benefactor of Marg.
She has been amazing to work with over the years. Her smiling face is one of the most frequently seen in the Western Wheel hallways. She has always gone out of her way to come down and let us know what is happening. And when we are there to take pictures of events Marg has helped plan, whether they are during the day, night, weekday or weekend, she is there, making sure everyone is having a great time.
On one occasion she took a rookie reporter who was brand new to the town on a tour to get them acquainted with the places and faces of Okotoks. For a reporter just getting their feet wet, just knowing how to get to the Okotoks Rec Centre was a huge help and Marg’s smiling face and helping hand made Okotoks look like a pretty great place to work.
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to a woman who not only makes Okotoks a year-round playground, but also a constant source of good cheer.
However, if anyone deserves to just take some time to enjoy themselves it is Marg and we all know she is a lady who knows how to have some fun.
