Celebrating Okotoks volunteers

It’s time to recognize those people in the Okotoks and Foothills area that are like dear old mom. Volunteers.

It’s time to recognize those people in the Okotoks and Foothills area that are like dear old mom.

Volunteers.

They are like moms, who are somehow able to do the ‘little stuff’ like keeping families together, children off to school and feeding the family while often holding down a full-time job.

And like volunteers, their work and effort often goes unnoticed or taken for granted.

April is Volunteer Month and it will be trumpeted with Volunteer Week April 7-13 in Okotoks. It’s highlighted by the Leaders of Tomorrow festivities on April 10.

It’s easy to overlook some volunteers’ effort.

Take the efforts of Alda Budge, who is featured on page 3 of this week’s Western Wheel.

Her efforts sound about as much fun as watching toast cook.

She is one of the army of volunteers in Okotoks filing income tax returns for individuals who need assistance.

It’s a job that would get buried in the vast amount of volunteering in the Foothills community.

But it’s an effort that not only helps the residents who are getting their taxes done, but it also helps the community.

The dollars and cents that the volunteers can save from going to Ottawa will stay in the clients’ pockets.

That money will permeate throughout Okotoks, helping the community.

It’s a volunteer effort that has gone unnoticed that benefits everybody.

It’s just one of many efforts being done in the Foothills.

There isn’t a school play, field trip, Dewdney production, Repair Café or even an election that gets done without volunteers.

The Wheel will feature one volunteer every issue in April.

But be sure to thank the volunteers who help the community every day of the year.
