A ticket raffle will kick off the second annual NHL-Flames Alumni game and gala scheduled for April 16 at the Centennial Arena and Foothills Centennial Centre. Proceeds from the Heritage Classic ticket raffle will be in support of rural recreation facilities, primarily the multi-purpose arena facility designated for the Heritage Heights School area.

Two tickets, valued at $275 each, are up for grabs in the raffle. The game tickets were donated by Sheldon Kennedy and only 200 raffle tickets are printed. They can be purchased for $25 each. The winning ticket will be drawn on Thursday, Feb. 17 at noon in The Western Wheel office. Better hurry to get yours by calling Signe at 403-995-0358 or email: [email protected]

Good news on the weather front. Beginning Feb. 10 and until the end of the month we expect the highs each day to be a little above the minus 2 average we normally see. Could it be the worst is behind us?

I thought last week I would get caught up on some trivia and jokes before I started to erase them off my computer by mistake.

I hope you enjoyed them.

This week let me remind you about three important dates. Number one of course is the upcoming Feb. 14, Valentines Day. My gut says it is better to miss a birthday than Valentines. Just a heads up fellas.

Always a fun event for those who wish to participate is Chinese New Year on Feb. 3. This year will be The year of Xin Mao or for those of us who don't understand it, The Year of the Rabbit.

Another date in my mind is Feb. 12. That is the night of the “Roast” for our long time mayor (now retired) Bill McAlpine. Check out the ad in this issue for all the details. Proceeds will go to a good cause and be announced soon. Tickets are available at The Wheel and Okotoks Sobeys.

This year we will experience four unusual dates... 1/1/11, 1/11/11, 11/1/11, 11/11/11... now go figure this out, take the last two digits of the year you were born plus the age you will be this year and it will equal 111.

Let me know if your total is not 111.

Kudos to the Okotoks Junior A Oilers and their fans for their record crowd at the Centennial Arena on Saturday. More than 1,500 people showed up for the game and it was a barnburner. The Oilers beat Camrose in an overtime thriller. Hopefully, Saturday’s game earned the Oilers a whack of new fans and the arena will be filled to the rafters for the playoff push.

Finally, the Main Stage students at Foothills Composite High School/Alberta High School of Fine Arts will unveil their new musical beginning Friday.

“Les Miserables” is likely the biggest challenge this program has tackled in its stories history, but from what I have heard it will be awesome. Make sure you check it out.
