Light up is about showing support

The holiday season is coming to Okotoks residents faster than the Grinch’s souped-up sleigh. It will be hard to keep one’s breath as Dec. 25 is ‘just’ 41 days away when the Western Wheel lands on your doorstep today along with a healthy supply of fliers to entice shoppers. The season gets off to a friendly start with the annual Light Up Okotoks Friday night in the downtown area. It’s an opportunity to not only celebrate the holiday season, but to celebrate the community feel of Okotoks and the Foothills area. Light Up in Okotoks and in Black Diamond-Turner Valley on Dec. 1, is a chance for the community to come together and enjoy festivities including carollers, maybe the odd reindeer and for those kids under the age of 90, Santa might drop in. Nearly as important as bringing community together, it allows Okotoks businesses to show what they have to offer. Sure, Christmas shopping isn’t easy on Light Up, parking is restricted (thank goodness, rosy cheeks and walking are all part of the atmosphere) and it’s hard to buy a loved one a gift when the whole family is in tow while little Johnny runs to check out the Sugar Shack. However, it’s a wonderful chance to see and, maybe later, support the Okotoks stores. It is the Foothills area businesses that make up the majority of sponsorships for the hockey, gymnastics and band fundraisers, and help out charities such as the food bank, AIM, Rowan House and others throughout the year. The businesses’ staff also greet you with a hearty hello and a smile, not gift-wrapped in excessive plastic from a major on-line service – far from ideal for environmentally-friendly Okotoks. So this year support the business in Okotoks and area. The have been supporting the community all year.
