Need for life-saving organs

The story of a toddler waiting for life-saving organs is one that tugs at everyone’s hearts. One-year-old Lukah Mitchell is presently in an Edmonton hospital waiting for organ donations and her condition is being called by her parents as day-to-day.

The story of a toddler waiting for life-saving organs is one that tugs at everyone’s hearts. One-year-old Lukah Mitchell is presently in an Edmonton hospital waiting for organ donations and her condition is being called by her parents as day-to-day. It’s a heartbreaking story for all involved. One can only imagine the pain and suffering for Lukah’s family and loved ones as they sit wondering if the organs will come. Added to the tragedy is the fact Lukah’s life is dependent upon the death of a toddler of similar age. Often when stories of the need for organs appear, there is an increase of people willing to take the steps to do so. That was made evident when Humboldt Bronco Logan Boulet was killed in the horrific bus crash that took 16 lives when the team was travelling to Nipawin on April 6. Boulet had the greatest assist of his young life. The 21-year-old was able to save six lives through his signing of his donor card. It also inspired hundreds of Canadians to register to give literally the gift of life. Yet, still many – the majority – of Canadians have not taken the steps to donate their organs. According to the Organ Project website, 90 per cent of Canadians support organ and tissue donations, but less than 20 per cent have taken steps to do so. It’s simple. To register as an organ donor in Alberta, visit www.myhealth.alberta.ca. But it also tough — coming face-to-face with mortality and the loss of loved ones. It’s a discussion that must be made among families and loved ones. And as is evident with a one-year-old girl in an Edmonton hospital, the sooner the better. Meanwhile not just Okotoks and Foothills residents, but Albertans and Canadians as Lukah’s journey has gained extensive media coverage, have their thoughts with her and her family.
