Some Okotoks town councillors asleep at the wheel

Dear Editor,

Re: Annexation of Land Proposal

As a previous business owner in Okotoks, I continue to be disappointed in how Okotoks handles future growth. Mayor and council cannot dictate where people choose to live. I cannot believe that any group of people could be so short sighted and clearly lack the strength and leadership to make decisions on behalf of the citizens of this town. When major decisions need to be made like the obvious and inevitable choice to remove the cap and deal with growth is put to more public consultation and more surveys and more votes, it shows weak leadership. I quote Councillor Hodson saying that the motion made by Councillor Matt Rockley to begin annexation was a “knee jerk” reaction is ridiculous. Last year the taxpayer paid for specialists to come in and have open houses regarding capping the population. They have paid for water specialists, they have paid legal fees opposing development on Okotoks borders and are paying for water licenses one at a time rather than investing in a pipeline and currently are entering into another appeal process. Knee jerk reaction... really? Quit spending tax dollars because you’re afraid you may not be too popular with a select few. Do what elected officials are paid to do, accept that the population is going to grow whether you like it or not and plan accordingly.
