Toddler provides gift for holiday

Like a lot of people in Okotoks, staff at the Western Wheel is crunching at deadlines as Dec. 25 quickly approaches — there’s been a lot of stress, both real and kind of imaginary.

Like a lot of people in Okotoks, staff at the Western Wheel is crunching at deadlines as Dec. 25 quickly approaches — there’s been a lot of stress, both real and kind of imaginary. But there was welcomed pressure on Krista Conrad when she was asked to write about the successful story of one-year-old Lukah Mitchell’s massive organ transplant on Sunday and Monday. The story got done and little Lukah and her family’s journey over the past several months put Christmas pressure in perspective. Throughout the painful journey – what will continue to be a long one – the Mitchells have handled themselves with dignity. Their story helped raise awareness of the importance of organ donations and making sure the proper work has been done so a transplant can take place if needed. The Mitchells’ first words after Lukah’s operation dealt with the gratitude and the grief they felt because their daughter’s new chance of life was because someone, somewhere has lost a loved one and is suffering. As 2018 comes to an end, there are some very real concerns for Albertans – as the protests in Calgary and Grande Prairie showed – the need for greater pipeline capacity has to get done to help pick up the spiralling downward economy. And hey, Okotoks town council did throw a small lump of coal in ratepayers’ stockings with a small increase in taxes than what was previously announced. Those concerns are definitely worthy of brow-furrowing worry, they affect Okotokians’ future. However, judging from the comments on Conrad’s story, Okotokians are relieved and delighted with Lukah’s operation so far. Here’s hoping for Lukah and her family, they can put this journey behind them, and they can start to sweat the small things like the rest of us at Christmas.
