The Diamond Valley Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Town of Diamond Valley, is excited present the first annual Ian Tyson Memorial Music Festival, Fly Spirit, Fly. It will be staged at the Municipal Reserve located at 6th Avenue and 3rd Street SW Diamond Valley, in the community of Black Diamond on July 30, 2023, from noon to 10 pm.

Ian Tyson was a renowned Canadian singer-songwriter and musician who passed in December 2022. He was widely recognized for his contribution to the folk and country music genre. Ian's music was deeply rooted in the culture, history, and landscape of Western Canada, where he spent most of his life. He captivated his audience with his heartfelt lyrics, soulful melodies, and rich baritone voice. His music was a reflection of his love for the outdoors and the cowboy way of life.

During his early career, he (as part of the duo Ian and Sylvia) released Four Strong Winds. This song would go on to be covered more than 50 times in five years. Notable singers to cover the iconic song include Neil Young and Johnny Cash. Albertans (through a radio listener’s poll) voted Four Strong Winds as the greatest Canadian song of the 20th century.

Ian was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2006. His legacy in the Canadian music industry will remain an inspiration to many aspiring musicians for years to come.

The Ian Tyson Memorial Music Festival is a wonderful way to honour Ian’s legacy.

Chelsea Vogel, Marketing Manager, says, “Come join us for an extraordinary celebration of music, community, and unforgettable experiences. Food and beverages allow guests to try a variety of local vendors. The beer garden will have selections from Fahr Beer, Spirit Hills Winery, Hard Knox Brewery, Twin Cities Saloon, and Eau Claire Distillery. Festival-goers can also enjoy a variety of food vendors including wood-fired pizza from Il Forno Vagabondo, and artisanal refreshments from local roasters, Black Sheep Coffee.
