How the right pharmacy can benefit your health

What comes to mind when you think of your local pharmacy? A place to pick up medications? While this is a service they provide, your local pharmacy can do so much more.

Today, Okotoks HC Pharmacy explains some of the many services provided by Alberta pharmacists so you can get the most out of your next visit.

An assessment of your health and drug therapy

You see the pharmacist putting together your medication package and bringing it to the counter. What you don’t see is them checking current test results they may have access to, double checking for interactions with other meds, and preparing to ask you some lifestyle questions to ensure you can and will take your mediation on time. If this is a compounding pharmacy and they know you don’t like a certain flavour or have an allergy to one of the ingredients, your pharmacist may have also tweaked the drug to make it easier for you to take.

Providing information

Sometimes you need relief from symptoms, but you haven’t been to a doctor and you don’t have a prescription. Your pharmacist is happy to discuss your needs and direct you to an appropriate over-the-counter medicine. If you are feeling shy about your symptoms, you can talk in the private consulting room.

Vaccines

Pharmacies are very convenient places for vaccines and some accept walk in appointments. (Check ahead of time, however, especially for the COVID vaccine. Some only accept bookings.) Do you have concerns about the flu or COVID vaccine? Your pharmacist has access to the latest scientific, evidenced-based research and is happy to answer your questions.

Help with the acts of daily living

The acts of daily living, or ADLs, are:

  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Meals/feeding
  • Transferring
  • Toileting
  • Ambulating
  • Memory care/mental stimulation

As we age, or if we have an accident or illness, these ADLs can be hard to perform on our own. Pharmacies have tools to help you with the ADLs. These tools include but are not limited to, hardware supports in the bathroom (e.g. handles, rails), canes and walkers, puzzles and books, portable toilets, and much more. Larger items, such as mobility scooters, can be discussed and ordered, depending on your pharmacy.

Delivery

Not everyone drives or can access a taxi service. Many pharmacies deliver medications to your door if needed, so you never have to miss a dose.

Wound care

Some cuts, scrapes, and bruises need medical attention, while some can be taken care of at home. Your pharmacy carries a variety of wound and post-op care products to keep the affected area clean and dry.

Maternity

A new baby is exciting, but there’s a lot of changes that happen to your body. Ask your pharmacist about compression bands for your stomach. These bands help support your abdomen and encourage your uterus to shrink back into place. Over time this happens naturally, but having support while your stomach muscles are still loose and you are recovering from the birth is very helpful and comforting. Also check out the selection of nursing pads, breast pumps, bottles, pacifiers, diapers, and everything else new parents and baby need.
